A network is designed to perform perfectly during the peak hours between 6-11 PM. During this time high volumes of data will pass through the network and the active devices will need to work at full power to handle this volume of data. During non-peak hours, the data is reduced but, the amplifiers and nodes still run at full power. Technetix proposes to reduce the current through the high power amplifiers (hybrids) during non-peak hours. This will save up to 10% power per device. As the losses in the power cables are I²R and the current I is also reduced, the power losses are significantly reduced. Overall this will give a huge saving without impacting on quality or performance.

How does your project address / improve the focus area (Monitoring and Measurement, Demand Response, Supply and Control)?

The Technetix project improves power consumption in the access network, which accounts for 70% of the power consumed by cable operators.

Power saving, work smarter instead of harder.

The ability to control and modify your network to suit your needs.

Why did you decide to take part in the Adaptive Power Challenge?

Power consumption in the cable network has always been a challenge. Going forward with RPD, LTE and WIFI hotspots, it will become even more critical.
